2007's most watched / best YouTube clips - the top 10 list!

YouTube have released their list of the top 10 most watched YouTube clips of 2007. This seems to have been widely reported but no-one seems to have actually published the top 10 list of 2007's most watched YouTube clips.

I have done a bit of research and have managed to put together what I think are the top 10 most watched videos on YouTube in 2007:

1) The most watched YouTube clip of 2007 is Battle in the Kruger - 21.7m views

Quite a long clip featuring lions and crocodiles attacking buffalo and then buffalo fighting back. Will feature in a National Geographic documentary in early 2008.

2) South Carolina – Miss Teen USA - 20.4 million views

Beauty pageant contestant gives a surreal answer to a seemingly straight forward question!

3) Chris Crocker defends Britney - 14 million views

Chris Crocker is moved to tears and swearing in a passionate (and slightly scary) defence of Britney.

4) Esmee Denters sings Justin Timberlake - 13 million views

5) Tay Zonday sings 'Chocolate Rain' - 12.7 million views

Original composition 'Chocolate Rain' has been interpreted in a number of ways......

6) Spiders on drugs - 11.5 million views

Starts out serious and then gets very silly!

7) Thriller in Manilla - 10 million views

Not boxing, but prisoners in a Phillipino prison re-enacting the Michael Jackson 'Thriller' video!

8) Otters holding hands - 9.3 million views

There seem to be a number of animal clips in the top 10 of most watched YouTube clips and this one, as the name suggests, features Otters holding hands.

9) Nora piano cat - 7.4m views

This is the first in a series of (very popular clips) of Nora the cat playing the piano!

10) Obama Girl - 4.4 million views

YouTube has been heavily used for the 2008 Presidential race and this viral video has gained a lot of attention. Whilst the Obama campaign have distanced themselves from it by pointing out that it is not an official video, it has nevertheless gained significant coverage.

2007 saw YouTube become an established broadcast medium. In 2007 the Queen used YouTube for her Christmas message and politicians the world over have started using it extensively (WebCameron, Kevin07, Sarkozy and the US Presidential candidates). Whilst the top 10 most watched videos of 2007 tend to be based around home made footage, YouTube's profile in political campaigns or presence at events like Davos show just how established it is becoming.

Footnote - YouTube's top 5 viral ad videos for 2007 have also been published. Heidi Edelmuller lists them here and also provides links for 2007's top 5 most watched YouTube ad videos.

These aren't the most watched videos of 2007. the evolution of dance has been #1 and still is #1 for years now. Plus, there are many many many videos that have been viewed more than any of these

'Music is my Hot Hot Sex' recently overtook 'Evolution of Dance' to become the most viewed YouTube video, though question marks over the validity of its view count has prompted the owner to delete it.

My list for 2007 is based on YouTube's press release for the most viewed clips of 2007 (with the criteria being that the videos also had to have been uploaded in 2007) - Evolution of Dance was not included as it was uploaded in years previous.

Other videos may now have overtaken the videos on my list (eg's tribute to Obama getting a massive amount of views in a short space of time) but my list is for Jan-Dec 2007.
