Facebook user numbers by country and Facebook usage by country as percentage of population

I thought it would be interesting to look at where Facebook has most significance. I have looked at total Facebook users by country and also mapped Facebook usage against population.

(Facebook usage by country is no longer published on the Facebook site so thank you to Jared for the advice on how to generate these figures - I am also hoping he will post his Facebook breakdown by US states on this blog shortly).

The above figures highlight countries where Facebook has the opportunity to grow and this may be one of the influencing ideas behind the Facebook Translation initiative. This is backed up when you look at Google Trends Site Visit data to see how Facebook usage has grown in each country.

The Facebook Site Visit graphs for countries like the UK look very different to the graph for countries like Chile (where you can clearly see the effect of Facebook launching in Spanish in Feb 08):

With Facebook currently being translated into a further 63 languages , global usage of Facebook will continue to increase and the above Facebook usage figures give insight into where the growth is most likely to occur.
