Twitter used for mountain rescue

A mountain rescue mission in the Swiss Alps today was aided by Twitter and GPS. Two snowboarders got seperated from their main group and Twitter was used to source information (like mobile numbers etc) to help with the search.

This shows how the immediacy of social media like Twitter can harness the power of community and help in crisis situations - unfortunately this time the story has a tragic ending and thoughts go out to those involved.
