The Beatles on iTunes - huge poster on Oxford Street, but traffic came from Facebook

The Beatles back catalogue is now on iTunes. As part of the promotion for the Beatles on iTunes there is a huge poster on London's Oxford Street:

Whilst this sort of stand out promotion may not be unexpected, there have been some interesting things happening online. Robin Goad from Hitwise has studied the traffic patterns for Beatles searching visitors to the iTunes store. He found that in the UK news sites, particularly the BBC, led a fair amount of people to iTunes store, but perhaps the most interesting find is derived from his comparison of the contributions of Search vs Social Networks.

Hitwise data showed that on the day of release, 'despite paying for 67% of its traffic, Apple was only the ninth biggest recipient of traffic for the search term "the beatles."' Furthermore, 'on the day the Beatles content came to iTunes, 26.32% of all Apple traffic came from social networks', particularly from Facebook.

Yet another example of the power of social referral - free traffic from Facebook vs paid for traffic from Google? As Facebook grows ever larger these sort of findings could become ever more common place.....

Victoria's Secret / Katy Perry 'Firework' lipdub video for Victoria's Secret Fashion Show 2010

Victoria's Secret have released a YouTube video in advance of the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show 2010.

Victoria's Secret Fashion Show 2010 - Katy Perry 'Firework' Lipdub video

The 'VS Angels Heart Katy Perry' film features Victoria's Secret supermodels Behati Prinsloo, Adriana Lima, Erin Heatherton, Lily Aldridge, Candice Swanepoel, Alessandra Ambrosio, Chanel Iman and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley in a Lipdub routine using Katy Perry's 'Firework.'

This lipdub film is part of the promotion of the 2010 Victoria's Secret Fashion Show in advance of it's screening on CBS on Tuesday 30th November. We've seen lipdubs before (notably the Canadian students with the Black Eyed Peas), but the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show / Katy Perry lipdub is an interesting way of tapping viral culture and using online video to drive attention for a TV broadcast.

Facebook Credits Gift Cards - now available at Tesco

Facebook Credits are a virtual currency that can be used to buy virtual gifts inside a range of games and applications on the Facebook platform. The trading of virtual goods is turning into big business, the FT writing that last year the virtual goods industry was worth more than $1bn in the US last year and pre-pay gift cards should see this virtual economy continue to grow.

Pre-paid Facebook Credits gift cards are now available in UK retailers Tesco and Game. The Facebook Credits Gift Cards function in a similar way to iTunes cards (buy card, scratch off code, use on site) and widen the scope of virtual gifting by removing the need to have a bank card to participate.

Facebook Credits Gift CardFacebook Credits Gift Card - front

Facebook Credits Gift Card backFacebook Credits gift cards - back

Whilst currently limited to virtual goods on Facebook there is an interesting comment in the Telegraph from Deborah Liu, manager of product marketing for Facebook Credits and games at Facebook. She 'told the Telegraph that although Credits could currently only be spent on Facebook.com itself, their reach could expand beyond the main site using Facebook Connect, which allows users to login to other sites with their Facebook ID.' There are intriguing possibilities in this idea - with it's huge reach, could Facebook Credits see Facebook (eventually) become a Paypal like banking / payment service.......?

Lacoste store QR code window displays (pointing to Lacoste Tennis game)

The Lacoste store at Westfield has a QR code mechanic in their shop window.

The Lacoste shop window QR code instructs people to 'scan the QR code with your smart phone to play the Lacoste Championship':

It all points to the Lacoste Championship which is a classic bat and ball type arcade game, also accessible through the website at www.lacoste.co.uk. The whole thing is integrated with Facebook / Twitter and at the end of the game players can register for a 15% Lacoste store discount and enter a Lacoste prize draw competition.

The whole thing is designed to complement the Lacoste sponsorship of the ATP Tennis World Tour - though the fact that I learnt about it through classic Owned Media (ie the shop window) is another reminder of the need to maximise all touchpoints for promotion, it's not just about having a Facebook page......

Genus Aves Iratus - Angry Birds ornithological documentation and news of the sequel!

Angry Birds seems to have taken over the world, but no-one had documented the genus - until now! Das Chupa has posted this Angry Birds image to the Zero Lives website, a rather magnificent old-style version of the Angry Birds / Genus Aves Iratus species!

Angry birds - ornithological documentation

...and if this isn't enough, the CEO of Angry Birds producer Rovio, Peter Vesterbacka, announced at the Virtual Goods summit that Angry Birds will soon be available for every gaming platform + a Facebook game is in development + there is an Angry Birds SEQUEL on the way, this time taking the pigs side!

Elf Yourself 2010 - OfficeMax and JibJab bring back elfyourself.com

Update ElfYourself 2011 - click here for the latest version!

Elf Yourself is back for 2010! Elfyourself.com is one of the longest running 'viral' campaigns, appearing every Christmas for the last few years, giving internet users the chance to 'Elf Yourself' and send personalised Christmas messages.

As with 2009, Elf Yourself 2010 allows users to upload photos from their desktop, Facebook - or this year a webcam too:

Uploading photos to create an Elf Yourself animation

Photos can be edited / adapted and up to five images can be added to an Elf Yourself greeting. Once uploaded, a theme can be selected - this year there are new Elf Yourself options such as '80's Dance Party', 'Surfing' or 'Hip Hop':

Selecting the Elf Yourself animation style

An Elf Yourself animation is then created to show the personalised elves dancing in the setting that has been selected. This can be forwarded by email or embedded / distributed through Facebook (though disappointingly this year there is no option to embed to a blog......)

Elf Yourself users can again pay for a permanent version of their creation as well as order gifts (mugs, mousemats etc) that hold the personalised Elf Yourself image.

OfficeMax have done this before, but is still entertaining and the Christmas season wouldn't be the same without the opportunity to Elf Yourself!

John Lewis Christmas TV ad - featuring 'Your Song' by Ellie Goulding [Video]

The John Lewis 2010 Christmas TV ad will debut across the UK in the X Factor on Saturday 13th November (ie tomorrow) - another advertiser harnessing the huge X Factor audience in order to break a new campaign.

The John Lewis Christmas ad has been uploaded to the John Lewis YouTube channel in advance of the TV first showing and 'shows a variety of people going that extra mile to make gift-giving special.....how a little inspiration can turn any product into the most personal present.'

Created by Adam & Eve, the ad is set to a new recording of the Elton John classic 'Your Song.' Vocals are provided by Ellie Goulding and the track was produced in collaboration with Ben Lovett from Mumford and Sons.

This is just a really nice, feel good Christmas ad - enjoy:

Ralph Lauren 4D Projection London, New Bond Street

Last night in central London, Ralph Lauren staged a 4D projection on their flagship store in New Bond Street (a similar event was held yesterday evening at the Ralph Lauren store on Madison Avenue in New York City.)

Ralph Lauren 4D projection London New Bond StreetRalph Lauren 4D projection London

The Ralph Lauren projection was to celebrate 10 years in digital and architectural mapping enabled the giant projection to work across the Ralph Lauren flagship London store front. Witnesses were treated to spectacular effects with 50ft models, racing horses and the like and even scented mist to complete the experience!

The full length video for the Ralph Lauren New Bond Street (London) 4D projection is now on Vimeo in HD here:

There is also a Behind the Scenes video that shows how the London Ralph Lauren 4D projection was created:

Another great example of how architectural projection can be used!

Masterchef 2010 final - remixed!

A vast amount of professional content is being re-edited / remixed and then redistributed through social platforms like YouTube. Regardless of whether you are in favour or against, there is no doubting the creativity and effort that goes into many of these productions.

One of my favourite recent examples is 'Masterchef Final 2010 - Funny' a re-edit of the BBC cookery competition:

The British Monarchy Facebook page links to various different official sites and details forthcoming engagements with Facebook users able to comment on everything.

The Facebook page joins the growing list of social tools used by the British Monarchy to engage the public - links to the The Royal YouTube Channel, the British Monarchy Twitter account and the British Monarchy Flickr account are below.

I'm not sure the Queen will need to buy Facebook ads to promote this though. The launch of the British Monarchy Facebook page has received widespread coverage across the media and already has approaching 50,000 Likes........

'Es Musica Literal' infographic music quiz

In 2005 the pictoral quiz concept was harnessed by a number of different advertisers as a means of increasing engagement - notably Stella's Cinema Sudoku and Virgin Music's 'Exercise your music muscle.'

This year has seen an explosion of infographics as sites have realised the pulling potential of data+graphics, so it's about time that someone merged the previous trend for quizzes with the current trend for infographics!

Presenting 'Es Musica Literal' - guess the bands represented by the thumbnail image:
